Welcome at the BeNeLuxSmelt website...
BeNeLuxSmelt is the tradeorganisation for manufacturers of processed cheese in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg.

Processed cheese was first produced about 100 years ago. As far as we know it was first produced in 1911 by the Swiss Walter Gerber at his Gerberkäse-plant in Thun. The cheese and buttertraders, the Wiedemann brothers of Wangen in Allgäu, were the first to market processed cheese on the German market. This happened in 1922 by their tradename ‘Adler'.

At about the same period in France, Léon Bel of Fromageries Bel' in Lons-le-Saunier started his processed cheese company ‘La vache qui rit.

In Austria the brand ‘Alma' was produced and introduced in 1925. Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxemburg started producing processed cheese shortly after that.
